Comments on the Draft Directive from the Central Committee Regarding Leadership Personnel at All Levels Participating in Manual Labor [1] (May 7 and 11, 1957)  I. Notes [1] This section (I) was written on the draft of the CPC Central Committee’s Directive on Leadership Personnel at All Levels Participating in Manual Labor.
Following discussion and adoption by the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, Mao Zedong issued another instruction on May 11, which constitutes this section (II). [ ] Bo Da refers to Chen Boda, who at that time served as Director of the CPC Central Committee Research Office and as Mao Zedong’s secretary. [3] Xiaoping refers to Deng Xiaoping, who at the time held the post of General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee. [4] When Mao Zedong reviewed the directive again on May 11, 1957, he set the date of the document as “May 10, 1957.” [ ] On page four of the draft directive, Mao Zedong made only a few minor textual corrections. [ ] The directive was published in the People’s Daily on May 15, 1957.
