(April 30, 1957)

To Comrade Qiaomu[2]:

This piece[3] is useful. Please have it reprinted in the *People's Daily*. There is one from Nanjing and one from Shanghai that have not yet been reprinted. Send them to me, and I will write an editor's note.

Mao Zedong
April 30

Editor's Note of the *People's Daily*: This article was published in the *Guangming Daily* on April 29. We have changed the original title to a subtitle and substituted an affirmative title[1] chosen by the author, to indicate our endorsement of this article. We welcome thorough criticism of errors (all truly mistaken ideas and measures should be criticized completely), while also putting forward appropriate constructive opinions.

--- Notes

[1] The title Mao Zedong re-wrote for Li Ruqi's article was "The Only Way to Develop Science," using the original title "On the Hundred Schools of Thought from a Genetic Perspective" as the subtitle. Upon Mao's recommendation, the *People's Daily* reprinted this article on May 1, 1957.
[2] Qiaomu, i.e. Hu Qiaomu, at the time Alternate Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary to Mao Zedong.
