Notes [1] Liu Hulan was a native of Wen shui County, Shanxi Province.
She joined the Communist Party of China in 1946 and was arrested on January 12, 1947, whereupon she heroically laid down her life for the cause.
Before her martyrdom, she served as secretary of the Women’s Salvation Association in Yunzhou Xicun Village, Wen shui County, Shanxi Province, and as a staff member of the district-level Women’s Salvation Association. [2] In March 1947, upon learning of Liu Hulan’s deeds, Mao Zedong inscribed the eight characters “Great in life, glorious in death.”
This inscription was later lost during the war.
In 1957, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Liu Hulan’s sacrifice, the Liu Hulan Martyr Memorial Park was constructed, and Mao Zedong rewrote the inscription for the park.
