Comments and Revisions on the Draft Central Directive Forwarding the United Front Work Department’s Opinions on Strengthening Local CPPCC Work (December 24, 1956) 1. A paragraph was added to the end of the Central Directive [1]. Comrades Shaoqi and Xubing [2] are requested to review it again, after which it is to be forwarded to Shangkun [3] for processing. 2. Around the summer of 1957, the Central Committee will convene a special meeting to discuss the work of the national united front. You are therefore advised to make preparations in advance by thoroughly examining and making arrangements for the united-front work in your respective regions, including work related to ethnic minorities. With regard to certain comrades who tend to adopt an overbearing attitude toward non-Party figures and exhibit extremely serious sectarian practices, they should be earnestly criticized and educated so as to correct their attitudes and工作作风. Printed from Mao Zedong’s manuscript.

Notes [1] Refers to the CCP Central Committee’s directive of December 24, 1956, forwarding the United Front Work Department’s “Opinions on Strengthening the Work of Local Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference” to the Shanghai Bureau, the committees of all provinces and municipalities directly under the central government, the party committees of autonomous regions, and the CPC Working Committee in Tibet, with copies also sent to local party committees at various levels. While reviewing this draft directive, Mao Zedong appended an additional paragraph at the end, which constitutes Section (2) of this document. [2] Xu Bing was then Deputy Minister of the CCP Central United Front Work Department. [3] Shangkun refers to Yang Shangkun, who at that time served as an alternate member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee.
