Peng Dehuai’s report forwarded a report by Zhang Aiping, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the People’s Liberation Army, and Hong Xuezhi and Zhang Lingbin, Deputy Directors of the General Logistics Department, dated August 24, 1955, on soliciting opinions on the styles of new military uniforms, and stated: Zhou Enlai had already approved this report on the night of the 24th, and at the same time verbally agreed that the troops would change into the new military uniforms for the parade on October 1, 1955. The report by Zhang Aiping and others gave an account of the situation in which relevant personnel were invited to the auditorium of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference on August 20 to view and discuss the new military uniforms. Those who viewed them unanimously held that the styles of the various uniforms, shoulder straps, collar insignia, and branch-of-service symbols all bore the symbolic characteristics of our nation, that their decoration was elegant and handsome, that the materials used were entirely domestic products, and that attention had been paid to economy and simplicity, which suited the actual conditions of our country, and expressed satisfaction. Everyone also put forward some suggestions for revising the military uniforms. Zhang Aiping and others explained these one by one in their report.
