Comrade Lu Dingyi:[1]

Aside from the revisions made by Xiaoping,[2] I have also made some further revisions (marked in red). Please consider and finalize them.

Mao Zedong
July 20

It is very difficult to demand that the bourgeoisie and religious believers actively support and not oppose Marxism. [1]
This point [2] can be made elsewhere; for the time being, do not raise it at this conference.

**Notes**
[1] The original draft of Lu Dingyi’s speech contained the following passage: “All those who hope for the success of socialist construction and socialist transformation, whether they are idealists or materialists, should actively support and not oppose the ongoing Marxist ideological movement, because this is a movement that concerns the destiny of our country and nation and is an absolutely indispensable part of our socialist construction and socialist transformation work.” When reviewing the draft, Mao Zedong deleted this passage and wrote this comment.
[2] This refers to the following passage in Lu Dingyi’s speech draft: “We should also actively propagate atheism among the broad masses of youth, women, students, and workers—that is, popularized materialist thought.” Mao Zedong deleted this passage during his review and wrote this comment.
