“Must Draw Lessons from the Hu Feng Incident”
(June 10, 1955)

The overwhelming majority (over ninety percent) of the people in our revolutionary ranks are good, and only a small number are hidden counter-revolutionaries or bad elements. But we must by no means take these counter-revolutionaries or bad elements lightly; we must resolutely purge them. Otherwise, they will spread, increase their numbers, damage our body, and cause serious losses to our cause.

In the great movement for the socialist industrialization of the country and the building of a socialist society, class struggle has become sharper, and counter-revolutionaries are bound to engage in more destructive activities. But we are capable of smashing all the activities of the counter-revolutionaries, because we possess powerful revolutionary strength. The foundation of our strength lies in the political vigilance of the masses and their ability to distinguish counter-revolutionaries. This requires that our leading organs at all levels pay full attention to strengthening their political education work among the masses and their organizational and leadership work.

We must be careful to ferret out all hidden counter-revolutionaries and must resolutely and differentially deal with those uncovered in an appropriate manner. This is the task of all members of the entire revolutionary ranks, and it is a major matter to which all patriots must pay attention.
