--- Notes

Two paragraphs added to the editors’ note accompanying the publication in the People’s Daily of “The Second Batch of Materials Concerning the Hu Feng Anti-Party Group [1]” (May 1955): 1. Some who either sympathize with Hu Feng or, while outwardly opposing him, inwardly do so only halfheartedly, argue that most of those materials date from before the liberation and therefore cannot be used as grounds for conviction. Very well, then, let us now examine the second batch of materials. 2. The counterrevolutionary Hu Feng clique, like other overt or hidden counterrevolutionaries, pin their hopes on the restoration of a counterrevolutionary regime and the overthrow of the people’s revolutionary government. They regard this as the “opportunity” they are “waiting” for. Printed in the People’s Daily, May 24, 1955. (Based on Mao Zedong’s manuscript.) Note [1]: See note [1] on page [ ] of this volume.
