Comments and Revisions on a Proposed Series of Articles in the People’s Daily Criticizing Hu Feng [1] (May 1955) I [2] Heighten vigilance and expose Hu Feng. II [3] Printed from Mao Zedong’s manuscript. The original editorial note is to be discarded and replaced with another. III If we do not heighten our vigilance, fail to clarify their issues, and do not put a stop to their subversive activities—allowing them instead to continue unabated in “contacting people,” “winning over supporters,” “engaging in pioneering work,” and “greatly strengthening their forces”—that is, if we let them develop and expand day by day, they will use their

“cluster grenades” to inflict serious damage on our revolutionary cause. Printed in the People’s Daily of May 18, 1955 (with Mao Zedong’s revisions). Notes [1] Refers to the proofs of a series of articles intended for publication in the People’s Daily, submitted by Deng Tao, editor-in-chief of the paper, to Mao Zedong for review at 10 p.m. on May 15, 1955. The original collective title of this series was “Hu Feng’s Anti-Party, Anti-People Group Must Be Thoroughly Criticized.” [2] This is the new collective title drafted by Mao Zedong for the series. The articles were subsequently published in the People’s Daily of May 18, 1955. Thereafter, the newspaper opened a special column under this same title, serially publishing several further groups of articles critical of Hu Feng. [3] This comment was written on the editorial note prepared by the People’s Daily for the purpose of publishing this series, as submitted by Deng Tao for review. Later, following Mao Zedong’s instructions, the People’s Daily drafted a different editorial note. What follows here (III) represents Mao Zedong’s revision of a single sentence in that revised note; the text set in Song typeface indicates what Mao added or altered. This editorial note appeared in the People’s Daily of May 18, 1955.
