Letter to Jiang Zhuru[1]
(May 1, 1955)

Brother Zhuru:
Your gracious letter of February has been received and read, for which I am very grateful! In your linguistic studies, you have raised differing opinions. Although I am unable to agree, debate is always beneficial. Your letter has been forwarded to the Script Reform Committee for study. Alphabetic writing is a comparatively convenient form of script. Chinese characters are too complex and difficult; at present, only simplification reforms are being carried out, but one day in the future a fundamental reform will inevitably be undertaken. This is my reply.
Respectfully wishing you good health and peace.
