I do not need to use this work allowance and it should be turned over to the Central Committee. Please deliver this amount now being sent and all future amounts to the accounting organ of the Central Committee.

[1] This comment was written on the notice sent by the General Office of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress to Mao Zedong on March 7, 1955, concerning the subsidy for the work allowance of National People’s Congress deputies. The notice stated: The work allowance for deputies to the National People’s Congress is calculated from September 1954 through March 1955, a total of 7 months, amounting to 350 yuan (50 yuan per month). It is hereby enclosed and submitted; please acknowledge receipt.
[2] Shangkun refers to Yang Shangkun, who was then Deputy Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and Director of the General Office of the Central Committee.
