Comments on Lu Dingyi’s Report [1] Concerning the Disposal of the Honorarium for the Bulgarian Edition of Selected Works of Mao Zedong (February 3, 1955) Carry out as proposed [2]. Mao Zedong: It would be best to return it on February 3. To be printed from the manuscript. Notes [1] Lu Dingyi was then Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. [2] In a report dated January 7, 1955, addressed to Deng Xiaoping, Secretary-General of the CPC Central Committee, with a copy to Mao Zedong, Lu Dingyi stated: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has forwarded a check for 7,299,400 yuan, representing the honorarium paid by the Bulgarian Communist Party Publishing House to Mao Zedong for the first volume of the Bulgarian edition of Selected Works of Mao Zedong. He sought instructions on how to handle the matter. Previously, when Hungary published the first volume of Selected Works of Mao Zedong, an honorarium was also sent; upon consultation with our department, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded that it would be appropriate to forward the funds to Hungary. In this instance, since the Bulgarian side has sent the honorarium for the first volume, we recommend forwarding it to the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party and suggest that, in future, all such honoraria should be transmitted to the fraternal parties in the respective countries.
