Directive on Lu Dingyi’s [1] Report Concerning the Handling of Royalties for the Bulgarian Edition of Selected Works of Mao Zedong
(3 February 1955)

Proceed as proposed.
Returning it would be best.

[1] Lu Dingyi, then head of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee.
[2] In his report of 7 January 1955 to Deng Xiaoping, Secretary-General of the CPC Central Committee, with a copy to Mao Zedong, Lu Dingyi stated:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has forwarded a cheque for 7,299,400 yuan, representing royalties paid by the Bulgarian Communist Party Publishing House to Mao Zedong for the first volume of the Bulgarian edition of Selected Works of Mao Zedong, and has requested instructions on how to handle it. Previously, when the first volume of Selected Works of Mao Zedong was published in Hungary, royalties were also sent. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs consulted us for our opinion, and we considered it appropriate to transfer them to Hungary. This time, with the royalties for the first volume of Selected Works of Mao Zedong sent by the Bulgarian side, we suggest transferring them to the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party. We further recommend that, in all such cases in the future, royalties be transferred to the fraternal parties of the respective countries.
