Letter to Mao Zerong [1] (December 18, 1954) Brother Shengwu: I have received your letter. You wish to come to Beijing again in April of next year, which I think is acceptable. As for Mao Xianmei [2], if he also wants to come, you may travel together with him. Stay in Beijing for about a month and then return home. I am sending you two million old yuan [3] to help with your daily expenses. Best wishes for your good health. Mao Zedong December 18, 1954 Printed from the manuscript. Notes [1] Mao Zerong, also known as Shengwu, was Mao Zedong’s cousin. [2] Mao Xianmei was also Mao Zedong’s cousin. [3] The amount is expressed in the currency then in circulation. According to the exchange rate established when the People’s Bank of China began issuing the new renminbi on March 1, 1955, this sum is equivalent to two hundred yuan (one new yuan being equal to ten thousand old yuan).
