Letter to Zhang Shizhao [1] (December 17, 1954) Mr. Xingyan: I have carefully read your kind letter [2]. As some people did not agree, it was not possible to nominate the said person. With best regards, Mao Zedong December 17 Printed from the manuscript. Notes [1] Zhang Shizhao, with the courtesy name Xingyan, was at that time a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. [2] Refers to a letter dated December 9, 1954, from Zhang Shizhao to Mao Zedong. In the letter, Zhang suggested including Wang Lengzhai on the list of members of the Second National Committee of the CPPCC. The “matter concerning the said person” mentioned in Mao Zedong’s reply refers to this very matter. Wang Lengzhai served as the county magistrate of Wanping County and as the Chinese chief representative in Sino-Japanese negotiations at the time of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937. After the founding of the People’s Republic, he was a member of the Third National Committee of the CPPCC.
