[1] This note of approval was written on a report dated March 27, 1954, submitted by Liu Bocheng, President and Political Commissar of the Military Academy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, requesting approval of graduation certificates. The “Appendix” referred to in the document is an explanatory statement attached to Liu Bocheng’s report concerning the design and production of the graduation insignia. Mao Zedong made a revision to the third item under “Description of Contents.” The original text of the “Appendix” read: “Chairman Mao’s inscription, ‘Strive to Study, Defend National Defense,’ signifies that, on the basis of Mao Zedong’s military thought, we should diligently learn advanced Soviet military science and build a modernized national defense.”
