Telegram on the Fourth Anniversary of the Founding
(October 5, 1953)

Comrade Wilhelm Pieck, President of the German Democratic Republic

Dear Comrade President:

On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the founding of the German Democratic Republic, I extend, on behalf of the Chinese people, the Government of the People’s Republic of China, and in my own name, the most heartfelt congratulations to the peace-loving people of all Germany and to you personally.

The Chinese people have observed with great joy the achievements made by the German Democratic Republic in the political, economic, and cultural fields over the past four years. The victory won by the German people, with the assistance of the Soviet Union, in their struggle against the provocations of international reactionary forces, as well as the significant results achieved during the talks in Moscow between the delegations of the Soviet Government and the Government of the German Democratic Republic, constitute a tremendous contribution to the consolidation of peace in Europe and the cause of peace throughout the world.

I wish the German people still greater victories in their glorious cause of striving for the establishment of a unified, independent, democratic, and peace-loving Germany. In this cause, the German people will forever enjoy the profound sympathy and full support of the Chinese people and the Chinese Government.

Mao Zedong
Chairman of the Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China
