Comment on Not Persuading Long Yun [1] to Donate
His Movable Property Stored in His Residence [2]
(August 2, 1953)

Not only should we not persuade him to donate it, but even if he himself is willing to donate, we should not accept it, so as to avoid being put in a passive position.

Mao Zedong
August 2

[1] Long Yun, a former high-ranking general of the Kuomintang. At the time, he served as a member of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, a member of the Central People's Government, and vice-chairman of the Southwest Administrative Committee.

[2] This comment was written next to the following passage in a July 20, 1953, opinion by Qi Yanming, Director of the General Office of the Central People's Government, regarding the handling of Long Yun's refund of deposits and compensation issues during the land reform: "Regarding the movable property such as antique treasures and automobiles stored by Long Yun in his residence 'Zhen Zhuang,' the United Front Work Department of the Yunnan Provincial Committee proposes, on the principle of his voluntariness, to persuade him to donate them to the government. We believe it is better not to touch them; if he wishes to sell them himself, let him be."
