A Letter to Pollitt Concerning the Donation for the Relocation of Marx’s Tomb[1]
(July 4, 1953)

Dear Comrade Pollitt:

Your letter of March 16, 1953 has been received.

We thoroughly agree with the measures you have taken concerning the tomb of Karl Marx. In order to demonstrate our concern for the life and work of the great revolutionary teacher of the proletariat, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China regards it as its honoured duty to assist in the smooth progress of this work and is hereby making a special donation of seven thousand U.S. dollars (equivalent to two thousand five hundred British pounds) to cover the expenses of relocating the tomb. Please ask the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union to forward this sum on our behalf.

With fraternal greetings,

Mao Zedong
