Comments on the Report Concerning Publicity for the First Batch of Female Pilots [1] (February 27, 1952) Please have Zhou [2] investigate whether this is feasible. If so, inform Xiao Hua to proceed with the arrangements. Mao Zedong, February 27. Printed from the manuscript. Notes [ ] These comments by Mao Zedong were written on a report submitted to him on February 27, 1952, by Xiao Hua, Deputy Director of the General Political Department of the People’s Revolutionary Military Commission. In his report, Xiao Hua stated that, according to the Air Force Daily, the Aviation School had recently graduated a class of female pilots who had mastered the skills required to fly transport aircraft. In order to coincide with the March 8th celebration and to promote the active participation of Chinese women in national defense construction, it was proposed that on March 8, three to six transport aircraft would disperse leaflets over Beijing, that representatives would deliver speeches at a commemorative meeting convened by the Beijing Municipal Women’s Federation, and that appropriate written reports would be prepared and newsreels filmed. On March 8, a ceremony marking the “March 8th” inaugural flight of the first group of female pilots was held at an airfield in the capital. The aircraft took off from the airfield at 12:15 and arrived over Tiananmen Square at 13:10, where they greeted the people of the capital. [2] Zhou refers to Zhou Enlai.
