Notes [1] Li Weihan was at that time Minister of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee. [2] The Panchen refers to Panchen Erdene Choekyi Gyalpo, one of Tibet’s religious leaders. [3] In his report to Mao Zedong, Li Weihan suggested presenting, in Mao’s name, such gifts as yellow satin kashaya cloth and brick tea to the Panchen Lama, together with a photograph bearing an inscription in Mao’s own hand. [4] Ta’er Monastery is located in Huangzhong County, Qinghai Province, and is one of the most renowned monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.
