Comments and Revised Draft on the General Political Department’s Directive Regarding the Commemoration of the Twenty-Fourth Anniversary of the Founding of the Army (July 9, 1951) 1. Some revisions have been made; it may now be issued. Mao Zedong, July 9 2. Our forward units must maintain high morale and continue to fight bravely. There must be absolutely no slackening of effort. They should not assume that peace can be achieved this time; rather, they should proceed on the assumption that peace will not come this time, that fighting must go on, and that we must inflict heavy casualties and destruction upon the enemy before peace can be secured. Only by adopting such an approach will we advance the cause of final victory; otherwise, it will be of no benefit. Printed from the manuscript.
