Letter to Li Jiehou
(April 2, 1951)
Brother Jiehou:
Please take this letter to the United Front Work Department and find Comrade Xu Bing[1] or other comrades, and discuss with them whether there is a way to find a free or work-study school for your younger sister[2], such as a midwifery, nursing, or other school. I think, as long as it is possible, we should help her resolve the issues of study and work.

Mao Zedong
April 2

[1] Xu Bing (1903–1972), a native of Nangong, Hebei. At the time, he served as Deputy Director of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee.
[2] There is an error here; it should be the daughter of Li Jiehou’s younger sister (Song Ming). In a letter to Mao Zedong dated March 28, 1951, Li Jiehou stated: I am currently in charge of the Machinery Section of the China National Import Corporation. My family has arrived in Beijing. Life in Beijing has been satisfactorily resolved, all thanks to your help. However, my father (i.e., Li Shuqing) has also sent Song Ming, the abandoned daughter of my younger sister, to Beijing with my family. My father wrote to request that you find her a free middle school to attend. I propose seeking admission to a free school or a work-study school for midwifery, nursing, or similar programs.
