For the Title of the Fortnightly *Learn Culture* [I]
(February 12, 1951)
Learn Culture
The title of the journal *Learn Culture* inscribed by Mao Zedong.
[I] In January 1951, to raise the scientific and cultural level of the broad masses of workers and peasants, Ma Xulun, the first Minister of Education at the time, proposed the establishment of the fortnightly *Learn Culture* and wrote to Mao Zedong requesting him to inscribe the journal’s title. On February 12, Mao Zedong wrote the three characters “Learn Culture” with a brush and replied in a letter: “I have written the three characters ‘Learn Culture’ as requested. I wonder if they are usable?” Subsequently, Zhou Enlai wrote an inscription for the inaugural issue of *Learn Culture*: “Study culture diligently so as to raise political and technical levels.” The journal was launched on March 1, 1951.
