Central Committee Endorsement of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee’s Report on the Suppression of the Yiguandao (February 28, 1951) To all Central Bureaus, with copy to their subordinate sub-bureaus, provincial party committees, municipal party committees of large and medium-sized cities, and district party committees: With regard to the suppression of the Yiguandao, the experience of Beijing has been highly successful. First, extensive long-term reconnaissance and preparatory work were carried out, rather than acting precipitously; second, before taking action, the masses were thoroughly informed to isolate and discredit the sect’s leaders; third, an exhibition was organized; fourth, funds contributed by members were returned; and fifth, the campaign was kept separate from the broader movement against superstition. These measures may serve as a reference for other localities. The Yiguandao has several million gullible and relatively backward followers nationwide. In any province where large numbers of Yiguandao adherents are present, the Party must adopt a prudent and appropriate approach in handling this issue. Issued by the Central Committee on February 28, based on Mao Zedong’s handwritten draft.
