Letter to Hu Qiaomu [1] on the Issue of News Reporting Concerning the Main Battlefront in Korea (November 17, 1950) Qiaomu: All news reports pertaining to the main battlefront in Korea should refer to the Korean People’s Army and the Chinese People’s Volunteers together; they should not mention only the People’s Army while omitting the Volunteers, as in the “Xinhua News Agency, the 15th” dispatch. Such telegrams are of no benefit whether sent to the front lines or disseminated nationwide. With regard to Korean news, even unimportant dispatches from TASS should not be forwarded. Xinhua News Agency ought either to send its own reporters to gather information and file reports, or to draft its own dispatches in Beijing based on internal intelligence. Mao Zedong November 17 The newspapers should publish editorials to encourage the Volunteer Army. On the Reference News, the practice of arbitrarily concocting sensational headlines without foundation—thereby aiding the Americans in intimidating the Chinese—also requires rectification. Printed from the manuscript. Notes [1] Hu Qiaomu was then Director of the General Administration of Press and Publications of the Central People’s Government.
