Telegram to Peng Dehuai and Deng Hua [1] Concerning the Enemy’s Discovery of Our Forces (October 25, 1950) Peng and Deng: (1) The enemy has begun to detect our forces. Last night, on the 24th, a certain puppet unit reported that the main enemy force consists of Eighth Route Army troops and is attempting to concentrate at Beizhen via the Yunshan–Wenjing mountain road. In addition, an air reconnaissance report indicated that enemy vehicles are continuously moving south from Jiangjie, among other observations. It is estimated that our forces will be discovered by the enemy even more extensively over the next two days. (2) Please consider whether it would be advisable to first seize and encircle one or two enemy units on either the 26th or 27th of tomorrow, preventing their escape and thereby drawing in the enemy’s main body for reinforcement. Please make a decision based on your assessment. (3) The puppet First Division has indeed reached Ningbian Longshan [cave]; please inform the 39th Army to be on the lookout and seize it. The main body of the puppet Seventh Division remains east of the river. Mao Zedong October 25, 5:00 p.m. Printed from the manuscript.
