Acceptance Speech at the Presentation of Credentials by Burmese Ambassador U Myint Thein
(August 7, 1950)

I am very pleased to accept the letter of credence presented by Your Excellency from the President of the Union of Burma, and I thank Your Excellency for your congratulations.

China and Burma share contiguous borders and are closely linked not only in history and culture but also through the profound, fraternal friendship that exists between our two peoples. In recent centuries, both the Chinese and Burmese peoples have waged long and courageous struggles for their national independence and freedom. Consequently, the sympathy and understanding between our two peoples run deep. The establishment of new diplomatic relations between China and Burma will undoubtedly further develop the friendship already existing between our two peoples, and I am confident that it will contribute to lasting peace in Asia and the world.

I warmly welcome Your Excellency’s appointment as the first Special Envoy of the Union of Burma to the People’s Republic of China.
