Letter to Huang Yanpei [1]
(August 5, 1950)

Mr. Renzhi:

I have read your letter. MacArthur[2] went to see Chiang Kai-shek, and it seems this was meant to bolster Taiwan’s morale somewhat; beyond that, it does not appear to amount to much. Still, our own preparations are necessary.

Respectfully,

Mao Zedong
August 5

[1] Huang Yanpei, courtesy name Renzhi, principal leader of the China Democratic National Construction Association. At the time, he served as a member of the Central People’s Government Council and Vice Premier of the Government Administration Council.
[2] Refers to MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers in Japan, who flew from Japan to Taiwan on July 31, 1950, to confer with Chiang Kai-shek on how to prevent the People’s Liberation Army from liberating Taiwan.
