Develop Production and Build Up the Militia

It should be actively proposed that demobilization is for the purpose of returning to one’s hometown to develop production and build up the militia, and that after returning home one should obey the leadership of the district and township governments, play an exemplary role among the people, and must not act recklessly.

This is a passage added by Mao Zedong on April 12, 1950, to a telegram from Lin Biao, Commander of the Fourth Field Army and concurrently Commander of the Central-South Military Region, to Deng Zihui, Tan Zheng, Zhao Erlu, and Tao Zhu concerning the demobilization of the Central-South troops.
