Inscription of the Newspaper Headline for the Henan Daily [1]
(1 November 1949)
Henan Daily
[1)
In September 1949, the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference was held in Beijing. Wu Zhigu, Chairman of the People’s Government of Henan Province, attended the meeting. During the session, he respectfully requested Mao Zedong, despite his busy schedule, to inscribe the headline for the Henan Daily.
In late October, the newspaper head designed by Mao Zedong was sent from the General Office of the CPC Central Committee to the Henan Provincial Party Committee. Mao had written four different versions of “Henan Daily.” After deliberation by the editorial board of the Henan Daily and approval by the Provincial Party Committee, the first version was officially selected as the standard headline and put into use on 1 November 1949.
On 1 July 1952, to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the editorial board of the Henan Daily, following a decision and with the approval of the Provincial Party Committee, switched to the fourth version of the “Henan Daily” headline that Mao had personally circled. This version has been used ever since.
