Inscription of the Masthead for the Shanxi Daily

(October 11, 1949)

Shanxi Daily

[Note] This was the first masthead Mao Zedong inscribed for the Shanxi Daily. During the War of Liberation, while the People's Liberation Army was attacking Taiyuan, preparations for founding the Shanxi Daily were underway. The North China Bureau of the CPC Central Committee instructed its Publicity Department and the North China People's Daily to urgently assemble a working team for the Shanxi Daily. Before the troops set out from Pingshan, Hebei, toward Taiyuan, cadres transferred from the North China People's Daily, the Jizhong Herald, and other units requested Mao Zedong, who was then in Pingshan, to inscribe the masthead. Mao Zedong took up the brush and wrote the four characters "Shanxi Daily" in a rounded and vigorous style.
