Mao Zedong’s inscription for the headline of the Southern Daily.
[1]
On October 12, 1949, Zhang Yunyi, the Second Secretary of the South China Bureau who was then in Beijing, wrote to Mao Zedong, requesting him to inscribe the headline for the soon-to-be-launched Southern Daily. Mao Zedong readily agreed and, early the next morning, handed over several horizontally and vertically arranged versions of the inscription to Zhang Yunyi. On a letter from Zhang Yunyi to Ye Zilong, Mao added the following note: “Copy exactly as on the separate sheet. To be delivered to Comrade Zhang Yunyi. Mao Zedong, Morning of October 13.”
