Letter to Shen Yanbing [1]
(September 23, 1949)
Brother Yanbing:
I have received your message. I wrote a single sentence [2] as an inscription; I wonder if it might be suitable? It would be preferable for you to write the cover text yourself, or perhaps ask Mo Ru [3] to do so. It would not be appropriate for me to write it.
Mao Zedong
September 23rd
[1]
Shen Yanbing was at the time Vice Chairman of the All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and editor-in-chief of the journal People’s Literature.

[2]
Refers to the inscription “May more fine works emerge” that Mao Zedong wrote on September 23, 1949, for the inaugural issue of People’s Literature.
[3]
Mo Ru refers to Guo Moruo, who at that time served as Chairman of the All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
