Mr. Ren Zhi: ︹︺2 The statement by the Minjian spokesperson on the White Paper is exceptionally well written, and it will undoubtedly play a significant educational role among the national bourgeoisie.
Documents of this kind issued by Minjian—vivid, positive, principled, forward-looking, and full of promise—should help the organization develop its own initiative, an attribute indispensable to any political party.
Respectfully submitted! Mao Zedong, August 24th.Mr. Ren Zhi: I have carefully read your esteemed letter of August 24th and am very pleased.
Minjian’s recent statement not only addresses the White Paper but also clarifies the very rationale for the existence and development of the national bourgeoisie; in other words, it establishes a theoretical foundation, thereby fostering Minjian’s initiative, which is highly conducive to future cooperation.
It is also commendable and essential that Minjian conducts its affairs in a democratic manner.
Although this approach may appear slow, it is in fact swift: once everyone has thoroughly understood the issues and reached consensus, subsequent matters can be handled much more easily.
Please accept my congratulations! Mao Zedong, August 26th.Printed from the manuscript.
Note ︹︺1: Huang Yanpei (1878–1965), courtesy name Ren Zhi, was a native of Chuansha, Jiangsu Province (now part of Shanghai). At that time, he was one of the principal leaders of the China Democratic National Construction Association.
︹︺2 Refers to the statement “Strengthen Internal Unity and Vigilance: A Reply Showing That the U.S. Imperialists’ Dream Cannot Come True,” issued on August 24, 1949, by a spokesperson for the China Democratic National Construction Association in Beiping, refuting the U.S. White Paper.
The statement pointed out that the U.S. Department of State published the White Paper titled “The Relations of the United States with China” in order to cover up its failures and deceive the people.
The dream of developing “democratic individualism,” as put forward in the White Paper, will never materialize.
The fundamental conflict of interests between China’s national bourgeoisie and imperialism determines its attitude toward all imperialist powers, including U.S. imperialism.
The Chinese national bourgeoisie will not become capital or a condition for the U.S. to advance “democratic individualism.”
Only New Democracy offers it the sole path to light and happiness.
