Comment on the Transcript of a Conversation Between an American Correspondent and Someone in Hong Kong[1]

(December 4, 1948)

We must immediately begin to pay attention to this kind of conspiracy. Do not allow the U.S. imperialists to succeed in their scheme in the New Political Consultative Conference and the coalition government.

[1] This American correspondent said that the core of the present policy of the U.S. State Department is how to foster an effective opposition within the new coalition government to counter the strength of the Chinese Communist Party. The United States would, in some form, recognize the new coalition government, resume trade with China, and invest in the new China. In this way, it would split the united front of the Chinese Communist Party and do its utmost to support the non-Communist elements in the coalition government. The condition for U.S. recognition of the coalition government is that its composition must be acceptable to the United States, and the coalition government must recognize the rights of the U.S. navy and army to bases in Shanghai, Qingdao, and other places.
