We Should Adopt a Protective Policy Toward Democratic Personages[1]

(December 27, 1948)

Yenching is a school run by Stuart[2], and Lu Zhiwei[3] is of course connected with Stuart. However, there are quite a few left-leaning individuals among the faculty and staff of Yenching, and Lu Zhiwei’s attitude is also relatively democratic. We should adopt a protective policy.

[1] This is a passage added by Mao Zedong when reviewing and revising a telegram drafted by Zhou Enlai for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, addressed to Peng Zhen, Ye Jianying, Zhao Erlu, with copies to Lin Biao, Luo Ronghuan, Cheng Zihua, Huang Zhiyong, and the North China Bureau.

[2] Stuart refers to John Leighton Stuart.

[3] Lu Zhiwei was then President of Yenching University.
