(June 4, 1947)

There is also a section of the constitutional monarchists, who disapprove of Chiang Kai-shek’s monarchical autocracy but still hope that Chiang Kai-shek will accept their theory of constitutional monarchy; they too participated in this session of the People’s Political Council. However, this People’s Political Council, together with the Chiang Kai-shek government, is, as Bishop Yu Bin stated in his opening address, a broken-down cart.

On the very first day of this session of the People’s Political Council, that is, on May 20, six thousand patriotic students in Nanjing formed a procession to present a petition to the People’s Political Council, demanding food and peace, but the entire city’s military and police forces engaged them in street battles and forbade the petition. The councilors of this People’s Political Council also slipped away and were unwilling to accept the petition.
