Telegram to Su Yu and Others[1]

(December 11, 1946)

(1) Celebrate the great victory at Yancheng[2]; it is hoped that commendations will be issued to all commanders and fighters. (2) It is hoped that Su will return north immediately to deploy for the operation at Shuyang. (3) After concluding the pursuit operations, the First Division and Pi’s Brigade[3] should rest for two or three days and then immediately return north.

[1] This is the main content of a telegram drafted by Mao Zedong for the Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee, addressed to Su Yu with copies to Chen Yi, Zhang Dingcheng, and Deng Zihui. Upon receiving this telegram, Su Yu immediately returned north from Yancheng and, on the 12th, joined forces with Chen Yi, who had come south from Shandong, to plan the destruction of the enemy in the Huai-Hai region.

[2] In the counteroffensive south of Yancheng from November 26 to December 8, the Central China Field Army annihilated over 5,000 enemy troops who had advanced northward from Dongtai.

[3] Pi’s Brigade refers to the First Brigade of the Central Plains Military Region, with Pi Dingjun as its brigade commander, which had broken through from the Central Plains to Central China.
