Congratulatory Couplet for Huang Youfeng and Zhao Xueming’s Wedding[1]

Carry the revolution through to the end;

Grow old together in lasting union.

A pair of confidential work cadres;

Two members of the working class.

[1] This is a couplet improvised by Mao Zedong during his speech congratulating Huang Youfeng and Zhao Xueming on their wedding, considered a quasi-couplet. Huang Youfeng (1914–1989), a native of Xingguo, Jiangxi. Joined the Chinese Communist Youth League in 1930. Joined the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army in 1932 and transferred to the Chinese Communist Party the same year. Participated in the Long March. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, served as Chief of the Confidential Section of the Eighth Route Army Headquarters and Director of the Confidential Section Office of the CPC Central Committee. During the War of Liberation, served as Director of the Confidential Division of the CPC Northeast Bureau and Director of the Confidential Division of the Northeast Democratic United Army. After the founding of the People’s Republic, successively served as Director of the Confidential Division of the Northeast Military Region Headquarters, First Deputy Director of the Confidential Bureau of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and Director of the Confidential Bureau of the General Staff Department. Conferred the rank of major general in 1955. Died in Beijing in 1989.
