It Is Possible That Central Jiangsu May Temporarily Fall, and Preparations Should Be Made in Advance[1]

To the Central China Bureau, and inform Chen and Shu[2]:

Under the offensive of Jiang's[3] superior forces, it is possible that the Central Jiangsu area may temporarily fall. You should make advance preparations so as to avoid being caught off guard when the event occurs and suffering excessive losses.

[1] This is a telegram drafted by Mao Zedong for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, addressed to the Central China Sub-Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

[2] Chen and Shu refer to Chen Yi and Shu Tong, who at the time were respectively serving as Commander of the New Fourth Army and concurrently Commander of the Shandong Military Region, and Director of the Political Department.

[3] Jiang refers to Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek).
