Talk with the Correspondent of the Associated Press[1]

(February 9, 1946)

The Political Consultative Conference has achieved satisfactory results, which is most heartening. Yet great difficulties lie ahead, and we must still exert ourselves, firmly believing that all obstacles can be swept away.

In terms of the general direction, the steps for China to step onto the stage of democracy have already been laid out and completed. In this process, Special Envoy Marshall’s contribution to bringing about a cessation of civil war in China and advancing unity, peace, and democracy is truly indelible. In fact, the restoration of peace and the establishment of a democratic government in China are also mutually beneficial to all countries of the world.

The most important task for all parties at present is to carry out the various resolutions of the Political Consultative Conference, organize a constitutional government, and bring about economic rehabilitation. The Communist Party is prepared to contribute its support to this end.
