I have come to Chongqing at the invitation of Mr. Chiang Kai-shek, Chairman of the National Government, to discuss the grand plan of national unity and nation-building. Now that the War of Resistance has been victoriously concluded, China is about to enter a period of peaceful reconstruction. The present juncture is of paramount importance. What is most urgent at this time is to ensure domestic peace, implement democratic politics, and consolidate national unity. All the pressing political and military issues confronting the country should be resolved in a rational manner on the foundations of peace, democracy, and unity, so as to achieve national unification and build a new China that is independent, free, and prosperous. It is my hope that all anti-Japanese political parties and patriotic patriots throughout China will unite and strive together to accomplish the tasks set forth above. I express my gratitude for Mr. Chiang Kai-shek’s invitation.
