A passage added to a letter to the Party Committee of the Huaibei Region on the question of study (July 5, 1944)

We are the vanguard of the most advanced class and the most advanced people; we are Communists. We should change the conditions that have existed throughout history. That is to say, within our Party and within our anti-Japanese base areas, there should not only be many thousand-li horses but also many talent-discerning judges of horses. The phenomenon of burying heroes should not exist, and if it occurs for a time it should be quickly eliminated.
