A passage added to "A General Introduction to the CPC’s War of Resistance"

(June 22, 1944)

The reason the Kuomintang allows these puppet troops to defect to the enemy, refrains from punitive action against them after their defection, and instead secretly maintains contact with them, is not only to oppose the Communist Party at present but also harbours a far-reaching plan. It aims, when the Japanese aggressors are defeated and withdraw from the major cities and key lines of communication, to have these puppet troops hide the enemy flags, raise the national flag, declare their "return to allegiance," seize these major cities and key lines of communication, and coordinate with the frontal Kuomintang forces to wage a nationwide anti-communist war. The so-called "theory of national salvation through a tortuous path," which has been prevalent among the puppet troops in recent years, serves precisely this purpose of national betrayal. The entire people ought to rise now and take heed of this conspiracy.
