Speech When Receiving Cadres Who Had Come to Yan’an from Other Localities[1]

(1943)

You have all come to Yan’an from other localities. First of all, you must get used to living in the cave dwellings of Yan’an, and you must also learn to live in the cave dwellings of Yan’an. The cave dwellings of Yan’an are the most revolutionary; in the cave dwellings of Yan’an there is Marxism-Leninism; the cave dwellings of Yan’an can direct the nationwide War of Resistance Against Japan. The people of the whole country now place their hopes on us, and they also place them in the earthen cave dwellings of Yan’an. Therefore, you must hold the earthen cave dwellings of Yan’an in high regard and learn to live in the cave dwellings of Yan’an.

[1] In August 1943, in a telegram drafted for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to Deng Xiaoping, Mao Zedong asked them to select a group of cadres to come to Yan’an to study. This is part of the speech made by Mao Zedong when receiving the cadres who had come to Yan’an to study.
