(I have come to Chongqing at the invitation of Mr. Chiang Kai-shek, Chairman of the National Government, to discuss the grand plan of national unity and nation-building. Now that the War of Resistance has been victoriously concluded, China is about to enter a period of peaceful reconstruction. The present juncture is of utmost importance. At this moment, the most pressing task is to ensure domestic peace, implement democratic politics, and thereby consolidate national unity. All the urgent political and military issues confronting the country should be resolved in a rational manner on the foundations of peace, democracy, and unity, with the aim of achieving national unification and building a new China that is independent, free, and prosperous. It is my hope that all anti-Japanese political parties and patriotic patriots in China will unite and strive together to accomplish the above-mentioned mission. I express my gratitude for Mr. Chiang Kai-shek’s invitation.)
