I have received your letter. I would like to have a talk with you in person. If you
agree, please be kind enough to come today for a chat. I hope Comrade Cao Ming
will also come with you.1

1. Ouyang Shan (pen name of Yang Fengqi, 1908–2000) was a well-known writer. Beginning in September
1941 he was the director of the Literature and Art Research Office at the Central Research Institute in
Yan’an. In February 1942 he went to the Central Party School for study. Cao Ming (b. 1913), a writer, served
as a special researcher in the Literature and Arts Research Office of the Central Research Institute. For Mao’s
