2. Brief Notes: (1) Chiang will continue to intensify his pressure on us; please make preparations. (2) In his speech, Chiang emphasized the grave threat posed by Japan’s southward advance to China, suggesting that China and Britain are likely to conclude a military cooperation agreement. Once the Kuomintang is drawn into Britain’s orbit, it will become increasingly difficult for them to surrender or to continue their campaign against the Communists, which is advantageous to us. (3) The Consultative Assembly passed a motion endorsing Chiang in retaliation for our non-attendance; however, even if we had attended, the motion would still have been adopted. We would have lost both face and troops, falling into a major trap. Therefore, abstaining from attendance was absolutely the right decision. We need only wait for a full-scale European war to break out, at which point the Kuomintang’s arrogance will diminish. (4) There has been no news yet of reinforcements being sent to Yichuan, but such a move remains possible. As for Central China, there is absolutely no viable course of action. After the Hou and Ma divisions of the 91st–92nd Armies occupied Woyang and Mengcheng, the enemy opened fire across the river, forcing Hou and Ma to withdraw once more. Our Peng Unit’s 344th Brigade is still positioned between the Wuyang River and the New Yellow River. Please inform Brother Liu of this.
