Letter to Zhou Enlai

(October 15, 1941)

Zhou:

(1) Most of the newspapers, periodicals, and aviation editorials mailed from your location to Ye Zilong[1], *Liberation Daily*, and other places are being received.

(2) Regarding various newspapers, in addition to agreeing to your sending three complete sets to the Investigation and Research Bureau, and one copy each to Chairman Mao, the Front Headquarters, *Liberation Daily*, the Central Organization Department, the United Front Work Department, the Youth Committee, the Military Commission, Comrade Kang Sheng[2], and the Border Region Government, please also add one complete subscription each for the Central Propaganda Department, the Central Finance Department, the General Office of the Central Secretariat, the Northwest Central Bureau, and the Marxism-Leninism Research Institute. For others such as Yan'an University, Lu Xun Academy of Arts, and the Academy of Sciences, select and order two or three copies of newspapers like *Ta Kung Pao*.

(3) Regarding various magazines, in addition to ordering one complete set for the Investigation and Research Bureau, please select those containing substantive materials, such as *Time and Tide Digest*, and those relevant to the various central ministries and commissions and schools, and purchase and order over ten copies according to their nature, to be distributed to various organs and schools (please send all to Xinhua Bookstore, to the attention of Deng Jie, for unified distribution by the General Office of the Secretariat).

(4) The Investigation and Research Bureau needs all kinds of political and economic books and newspapers from various places at home and abroad. It is hoped that there will be a person specifically responsible for collecting these in Chongqing. Economic magazines are currently very scarce; for instance, *Central Bank Monthly Report* and *Financial Weekly* are not available. It is hoped that comrades responsible for purchasing books and newspapers will pay attention to the thesis indices at the back of *Financial Review* and the books published by the Southwest Industrial Association and the National Economic Research Institute.

[1] Ye Zilong, then serving as Chief of the Confidential Section of the Central Military Commission and secretary to Mao Zedong.

[2] Kang Sheng, then serving as a Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.

Regarding newly published books on various international issues and on Chinese economics and politics, none have been purchased here for a long time; please also take note to purchase them on our behalf. Whether the Chinese Cultural Service Society can be prompted to establish a branch in Yan'an, please consider.

Mao Ren[1]
